Daily Defense 2-6: The Pros & Cons of Pocket Carry

Author Jeff Gonzales

If the purpose of daily carry is to have a concealed firearm with you at all times, can you just carry the gun in your pocket? Yes, you can - but pocket carry brings with it some limitations, especially in the size of the gun. You're limited to sub-compact and micro-compact semi-auto pistols and J-frame revolvers. No full-size duty pistols - unless you have very big pockets. Even so, having a gun is better than having no gun. NEVER carry a firearm in your pocket without a holster. The holster prevents the gun from "printing" and keeps pocket litter from fouling it. Should you carry in your front or rear pocket? The front pocket is difficult to access when you're sitting, so the back pocket is a better carry option if you sit a lot. For Jeff, drawing from his back pocket also has the benefit of closely mimicking his normal strong-side draw. Practicing your pocket draw is critical! Start learning by drawing from the standing position. Then move on to other stances: sitting, kneeling, on your back, on your stomach. With practice, it's quite easy to draw your gun from your back pocket in any of these positions. If you go with pocket carry, remember to: choose a gun that's small enough, select clothing that works well with your carry position, and use the right holster.
