Daily Defense 2-4: Benefits of "Strong Side" Concealed Carry

Author Jeff Gonzales

"Strong-side" concealed carry places the firearm on your waist for easy access by your dominant hand (the one you hold the gun with). It's a very popular carry method because it makes the gun readily accessible, so more holsters are made for strong-side carry than any other method of carry. This in turn maximizes your choice of firearm because you can find a strong-side holster for just about ANY handgun. Strong-side carry's other benefits: Comfort - freedom of movement and mobility with minimal restriction. Convenience - it's compatible with many different lifestyles. Speed - quick access to your firearm and fast draw stroke. Versatility - comfortable in both extreme heat and extreme cold. Strong-side carry has one major "con": It's not the best way to conceal a firearm. The entire gun and holster are on the outside of your pants. Wardrobe decisions have to be made carefully to ensure you conceal the ENTIRE gun. Heavier fabrics resist printing more than light stretchy synthetic fabrics that may conform to the contours of the gun. "Pancake" holsters are a big help in minimizing the gun's profile. They have a belt loop in front of the gun and one behind it that pull the gun close to your body and keep it concealed.
